FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DISK MOUNTS

Should I use iSCSI, or UNIX NFS / WINDOWS Network to mount Butler disks directly?
All three protocols allow you to mount Butler drives directly. The NFS and SAMBA mounts are dynamic and automatic, executed by ButlerAgent when the disk is required. iSCSI requires that you install our iSCSI driver for Windows or Linux, is a permanent mount, and is typically used for databases over 50 Gigabytes in size. Our version of NFS is the most popular means of mounting drives.

Why not use my current snapshots?
Disk snapshots are not point in time recovery capable, they use expensive NAS or SAN disk, there is a window of time required to re-sync the drives you snapped from and that window gets bigger and bigger as the database size increases, it's a manual process so if you add a disk and forget the mirror snap then you're out of luck at recovery time. Log backups are also likely to tape when using snapshots. Snapshots are an expensive, slow, manual, error-prone, time consuming and tape based recovery architecture. What a disaster. Backupbutler has no backup window because RMAN backups run in the background, are completely reliable because RMAN doesn't care about your physical configuration, eliminates expensive NAS/SAN disk and provides recovery from disk. And you can schedule log backups every 30 minutes instead of every day. Case closed.

APPLIANCE MAINTENANCE

Do I ever need to log on to the Appliance operating system directly?
No. The appliance is designed to be operational 24x7x365 and all necessary user operations are accessible from the browser interface. For security reasons the appliance is designed to notify you by email if attempts are made to gain access to it directly (Tripwire), and appliance internal records are kept of such attempts. No software inside the appliance is user serviceable.

Is there any appliance mainteance required?
System architecture is such that any maintenance the appliance requires can be accomplished by use of the browser interface, with prior automatic email notification to you that such a condition exists. These are exceptional conditions, the appliance is designed to run for years without such maintenance.

How are appliance software updates done?
The appliance system software is designed to be updated with releases of new ButlerAgents transparently. When a new version of the agent is available, you download it from our site and apply it to your TargetServers. When the agent is installed it first checks to see if the appliance requires to be updated and does so if necessary. The system is built with maintenance free operation as a key design goal.

LEGACY SYSTEM INTEGRATION

Does it integrate with tape?
Yes. You purchase a system large enough for multiple fulls and transfer obsolete fulls/logs off to a system with the tape on it. The system fully integrates with any Veritas, Legato or other tape based software.

Does it integrate with operations?
Yes. XML front end, SNMP monitoring and operations user login are all standard. If you have an integration need we don't have, we'll provide it.

Can it replace tape based systems?
Yes. Our 3 TB 4U rack system is large enough to hold 90 days of fulls for a typically sized shop. For larger shops our 10 TB enterprise stack can replace database tape libraries, at a list cost of 150$k. The systems are easily expandable to a Petabyte, and are all controlled by the same head. BackupButler specializes primarily in database backup, and if your database is Oracle, RMAN compresses the data and only backs up the BLOCKS USED. Keep this in mind if you are currently using manual hot/cold backups or manual snapshots because this alone can save astounding quantities of space. BackuButler is not copying the entire datafile, just the used blocks.

Will industry replace tape based backup with disk to disk soon?
Yes. 75% of respondents to a well known trade survey (Byte and Switch) said they would replace their database backup systems with backup to disk solutions in the next 2 years.

INFOSTOR April 2004 In a survey of 222 IT users, ESG found that 38% of technology executives at enterprise companies said that 20% of their tape-based recoveries failed.

Disk to disk is faster, safer, more secure and many times more reliable. And keep in mind that BackupButler is not just a disk to disk backup system. BackupButler contains recovery catalogs and intelligent processes for backup and recovery, making a "run the script every night and cross your fingers" standard software program obsolete!

COMPETITORS

Who is our competition?
Veritas provides software but no catalog, no infrastructure, no disk, no RMAN expertise. EMC and Network appliances or any of the other million storage manufacturers that ship just disk do not have an integrated software suite for controlling Oracle RMAN nor the rest of the infrastructure it takes you 2 months to build and test.

And everyone in the industry expects you to rely on just tapes offsite for disaster recovery, no catalog. If this infrastructure problem wasn't such a big deal then much more than 2% of Oracle databases would be protected by RMAN. The infrastructure is just too complicated otherwise.

We provide you everything you need in one box, at prices less than it would cost you just to order the disk. We provide you built in RMAN expertise, with the ability to do RMAN PLUS with special custom BUTLER tags that the agent uses to do extra processing, such as build directories before a database duplicate. Not even Oracle Corporation provides you this kind of functionality. Rman never had it so good, and neither did the DBA.

Our appliance comes complete with intelligent backup software designed specifically for your database and our hardware. We utilize our own recovery catalog. We utilize our own RMAN task templates that you can modify. We give you massive time savings and throughput. You MUST have software that manages the backup. Everything is intergated into one non-stop platform with specialized linux kernel development and heavy integration expertise. Available to you for an amazing cost /capability /performance return on investment.
